Selling domains

Domain licences in the .au, .com.au, and .net.au spaces can be traded like any other asset

Is it legit?

Selling domain licences in the .au, .com.au, and .net.au namespaces is permitted by auDA, the governing body of the au domain space (see Domain investing and monetisation). This can be a very lucrative way to make money, given the relatively low cost of the initial licence purchase.

Following recent changes, it is also permitted to register domain licences in these spaces with the sole intention of generating an income by domain parking or reselling the licence.

Selling your domain name(s)

The process of selling your domain name is formally known as a Change of Registrant (CoR). Change of Registrant can occur between any parties who meet the eligibility requirements at the time of transfer, though it may also be possible to transfer a licence from a registrant who is no longer eligible (for example, a deregistered company).

Dimpl makes it easy to manage this process by automating the Change of Registrant through one of its registrars. As a trusted third party, Dimpl can collect payment in advance and hold this pending successful transfer of the licence.

To advertise your domain names for sale on Dimpl, simply:

  1. Ensure the domain is registered in Dimpl
  2. Validate your ownership of the domain licence
  3. Click the 'Advertise to sell' button in the Actions section of the domain page on Dimpl
  4. Specify the sale price and any sale inclusions on the displayed form and click the Submit button to proceed

The domain name status will change to forsale and the domain name will be listed on the forsale page on Dimpl.

Setting the domain forsale automatically updates the DNS settings of the domain to create a holding page that allows buyers to purchase the domain, or make an offer for your review and acceptance.
